Approved Vendor List (AVL)
Also known as: AVL, Approved supplier list
An approved vendor list (AVL) is the register of suppliers that have been vetted and authorised for an organisation to buy from.
The AVL is a control: buyers are expected to purchase only from suppliers on it, ensuring every vendor has passed onboarding, due diligence and quality checks. It reduces risk, prevents maverick spend and keeps compliance simple because approvals happen once, up front.
Maintaining an AVL means periodically re-reviewing suppliers and removing those that underperform or lapse on compliance. On a procurement platform the AVL can be enforced automatically — only listed, pre-approved suppliers appear in the catalogue buyers can order from.
