Master Data Management (MDM)
Also known as: MDM
Master data management (MDM) is the discipline of maintaining a single, accurate and consistent set of core data across an organisation's systems.
Master data is the foundational information an organisation relies on — suppliers, products, categories, prices and cost centres. MDM establishes one trusted version of that data, with governance over how it is created, changed and retired, so the same supplier or item is not recorded differently across ERP, procurement and finance systems. It combines processes, standards and tools.
In procurement, good master data underpins accurate spend analysis, clean supplier records and reliable catalogues; poor master data produces duplicate suppliers, miscategorised spend and reporting no one trusts. MDM is closely tied to vendor master data and spend taxonomy, and it is a prerequisite for meaningful procurement analytics and system integration.
