Sourcing & Suppliers

Second Source

A second source is an additional qualified supplier for an item so the buyer is not dependent on a single supplier.

Establishing a second source means qualifying and, ideally, using an alternative supplier alongside the primary one for the same item. It protects continuity if the primary supplier fails, raises prices or cannot meet demand, and it preserves competitive tension. For critical components and materials, a proven second source is a core resilience measure rather than an optional extra.

A second source only helps if it is genuinely ready — qualified, capable of matching specifications and able to scale up quickly. Some buyers keep a small ongoing share of volume with the second source so it stays active and warmed up. The trade-off is the cost and effort of qualifying and managing two suppliers instead of one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a second source?
A second source is an additional qualified supplier for the same item, kept so the buyer is not dependent on a single supplier and can maintain supply if the primary one fails.
How is a second source different from dual sourcing?
A second source is the backup supplier itself; dual sourcing is the strategy of actively splitting volume across two suppliers. A second source may be held in reserve rather than used routinely.
