Robotic Process Automation (RPA)
Also known as: RPA
Robotic process automation (RPA) uses software bots to carry out repetitive, rule-based tasks that would otherwise be done manually by people.
RPA software mimics the actions a person takes in applications — logging in, copying data, filling forms, moving files — to automate high-volume, rule-based tasks. In procurement, it is used for jobs such as entering purchase orders, matching invoices, updating supplier records and pulling reports from multiple systems, running quickly and consistently without fatigue or error.
RPA works best on stable, structured processes and is often a faster route to automation than reengineering systems, because bots sit on top of existing applications. It complements deeper integration and increasingly overlaps with AI for tasks that need judgement. The payoff is lower processing cost, fewer errors and staff time freed for higher-value work.
Frequently asked questions
- What is robotic process automation (RPA)?
- RPA uses software bots to perform repetitive, rule-based tasks — such as data entry and invoice matching — by mimicking the actions a person would take in applications.
- How is RPA used in procurement?
- It automates high-volume tasks like entering purchase orders, matching invoices, updating supplier records and compiling reports, cutting processing cost and errors while freeing staff for higher-value work.
