Cross-docking
Cross-docking is a logistics practice where incoming goods are transferred directly from inbound to outbound transport with little or no storage in between.
In cross-docking, products arriving at a distribution centre are unloaded, sorted and reloaded onto outbound vehicles almost immediately, bypassing the usual putaway and long-term storage steps. This shortens the time goods spend in the warehouse, cuts handling and holding costs, and speeds delivery to the final destination.
Cross-docking works best for fast-moving, pre-sold or time-sensitive goods where demand is known and storage adds no value. It demands tight coordination and accurate timing between inbound and outbound flows, since goods must be ready to move on quickly rather than wait in stock.
