cXML

Also known as: Commerce XML

cXML (Commerce XML) is a widely used standard for exchanging procurement documents such as PunchOut sessions, purchase orders and invoices between systems.

cXML defines the message formats that let a buyer's e-procurement system and a supplier's catalogue talk to each other — setting up a PunchOut session, returning a shopping cart, sending a purchase order and receiving an invoice. It is the most common protocol behind PunchOut integrations.

Because cXML is broadly supported by major procurement platforms, it lets a supplier connect to many buyers using one standard integration rather than a bespoke one per customer. It underpins Level 1 and Level 2 PunchOut, where Level 2 allows deeper catalogue navigation.
