Published by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 9001 sets requirements for how an organisation documents, controls and continually improves its processes. Certification, awarded after an independent audit, signals that a supplier manages quality systematically rather than relying on individual effort.

In supplier qualification, ISO 9001 is a widely recognised indicator of process maturity and is often requested or scored during evaluation. It is not a guarantee of product quality on its own, so buyers usually combine it with references, samples and performance monitoring when assessing a supplier.
